i think Wilson will replace Bates for the return leg although he's not quite ready. Pedro is desperate to do well in this comp and surely Alves will get wee break.

Bates is more than enough

Can't see it, thought Bates was excellent last night, and deserves to keep his place til Alves arrives

Bates was comfortable enough so he should start 2nd leg we have to remember we were playing a very poor team. Cardoso looks very solid with a bit of class.

Don't see why he'd do that. Bates and Cardoso done well together, fair enough they weren't tested a lot but I think Bates is growing as a player really quickly for someone who's only played a handful of games in the first team. He gets stick from some folk and I don't understand why because he has never really put a foot wrong.

I like Bates and I have high hopes for him but he was very poor in the air last night. Hooefully playing and training with Alves will help him improve on that.

Bates is a young guy who is excelling for his age he has done nothing wrong but as usual experts who I can't stress enough could not kick their own arses seem to want him to fail and find fault in his game.

Couldn't agree more Gary. All I seem to hear is people absolutely slating the boy and I haven't seen him do anything majorly wrong. Is he the finished article? No. Not by a long shot but I think he has plenty of potential.

AT no point did i slate Bates. i like him n i love that we're bringing through our own. it was the boys first game in Europe and he did OK, could have been better in the air and distribution could have been better. I'm sure he'll continue to progress under PC but he needs time. i just think in the return Pedro will go with experience. The goal from Kenny n Nico came purely from experience it's VITAL!

If his name was Batesio fans would be raving about his potential. I just don't understand why some fans seem to enjoy slaughtering our own. Having young Scots in our team is vital now and they need our backing 100%, esp if they make mistakes. Support your team

I think bates is not great. My 80 year old mum could have strolled through that game the other night at C-Back. he's poor in the air and never attacks the ball. he's not exactly blessed with pace either, and he's not exactly a strong athlete. His only saving grace is that he reads the game well at times. would be better out on loan to harden him up. We'll dominate 90% of our games this season, and it won't do him any good being carried through by Alves or Cardosa. a season with the likes of Morton or Dumbarton would do him world of good.

The boy Bates played well the other night and looks much more confident. Also provides good physical presence when we have corners and free kicks. I like the boy and think he has a big future. Unlike last season looks like we have 4 good centre backs ( and by all accounts a further 2 very promising youngsters looking to breakthrough) .

How does he get experience though if he's dropped for another defender? 🤔

The only player that played poor was Waghorn. Bates had a decent game. He is a young lad and will develop into a quality centre back with the help of the coach and Alves.

Bates doesn't look the part at all. Know a good centre half when i see one. Last season, when we played Aberdeen, Bates played with that boy Aiden Wilson and he looked by far the better prospect. The boys clumsy, slow and unsure of himself and he did make a couple of mistakes last week troops. Better opposition will punish him.
