Long time lurker first time poster, I’ve got to ask if we are looking at any fullbacks?

I’ve loved tav since his debut v Burnley, but he’s been shocking so far this year. Barisic we all know is hit and miss as is Yilmaz. Sterling I haven’t seen yet so can’t comment, and yfeko looks decent.

Right now the manager expects his full backs to be he men with super powers it's a problem and it showed last night that the guys are not what he expects . who is?

Doesn't matter if hos goal got us through he's been dreadful and continusaslly gets exposed down his side of park him and Barisic are biggest weakest links in this team a blind man can see that.

I agree the fullbacks aren’t what they used to be.
I think the fact we’re only playing the 2 centre mids and not 3 to cover them is affecting them going forward. Obv against a team like psv we’re going to be pinned back.

Think the problem is tav and BB are getting on a bit tho k both are 31/ 32 so when you’ve been playing that role for a number of years it’s hard to keep the standard up, if yilmaz can stay for a believe he could play that role really well don’t think sterling suits our system for the way we play would really like another young athletic right back who’s really fit can get up and down.

Tavs goal getting us through means nothing when it comes to his defensive ability. The games I’ve seen this season he’s been beaten in a lot of his 1 v 1 battles.

Nobody is questioning his offensive ability, but defensively questions have been asked a little bit in recent years but now more than ever.

Anyone whose played football at a decent level will understand that our two fullbacks are rarely out of position. They are exposed when the front 3 or midfield 3 miss their press and stop the outball. It’s the risk we play with the system where the full backs are on the front foot. That’s why the number 8s or the number 6 act as covers for each full back. Tav and Borna get the blame as they are “defenders” but in reality a defender is a the last thing a modern day full back is or is asked to do. Again, especially in our system. Our full backs get a hard time but it’s not justified and again, anyone who’s played at a decent standard or has/ does coach the game will know it’s not our full backs that are the issue defensively. Hence why no manager has dropped them to come close to.

Not only is Tav a bombscare in defence but even going forward he is useless recently. His crosses and passing is poor. Freekicks not great and yes he gets the odd goal from time to time (plus his penalties but most players can score penalties) but surely it would be better to have someone in that is actually able to defend and not put us in bad situations.

Other players would fare better with better crosses and passes rather than us getting the odd goal from Tav.

(PS. love Tav to bits but just feel his time is up)

Full backs are getting exposed because they are getting no cover from the midfielders. On Tuesday night and in the first half over in Geneva the opposition overloaded down the wings and Raskin and Cifuentes in particular gave no support. Gerrard used to use Jack and Kamara to do this but the current two are struggling with it. If they don`t do this and we aren`t playing with wingers there is nothing to stop good players like Dest and Lang one twoing their way round Tav. It also stops him getting forward, the midfield needs sorted or we need to go three at the back or this will keep happening against good teams.

I find it funny how much we grill Tav and Borna about being exposed against PSV when literally Dest and Teze arguable played way way worse than both of them.

you can clearly see we struggled at the back hence a dominant force in the box too back up goldson n souter who?

as our wing backs attack they get caught out to often

psvs second should have been caught n punted out the park it was scrappy defending n dissapointing. another silly goal too lose as laspe of concentration n tiredness
we need that solid option too have

another centre would certainly make us stronger n help clear our lines.
