RE: GBC, in the 70s and 80s as kids when when we were short on cash we used to go round asking for empty ginger bottles and then cash them in on occasion, people who use to do it often were referred to as GBCs, ginger bottle collectors, it was a derogatory term in the kids world but was just curios to see is anyone else used it as a kid.

People who collected ‘Ginger Bottles’ were derided as ‘ Ginger Merchants’ where I lived. Many a summer ‘ Jubilee’ or ten pence mixture was purchased with a ‘Glass Cheque’. Happy Days.

Our GBC’s were known as Hectors, Rhyming slang for Ginger bottle collectors, and empty bottles were known as ginky’s. I have fond memories as a kid, when my brother cousin and I would go to a local plate mill at the Weekend where my papa was a foreman to collect the “ginky’s” that the workmen would leave out for us.
A few message bags full of ginky’s and you wouldn’t call the queen your cousin.
And still we follow on…….

I can remember my grandad used to tell me that is father was the local coal man in a small village called Creetown in South West Scotland him an his brothers from a very young age would shovel the coal and collect the bottles from all the men who worked in the coal mines and the gypsies and on a Friday night his mother would be waiting with her hand out for some of the money they they got but we're always left enough so they could make the football.

“Hector Hector ginger bottle collector”. We called the empties jeggies and you would go to the shop in stealth mode trying to avoid getting spotted or the dreaded chant shouted at ye.

When I was young the term was bottle bealer. Used to get a red neck getting sent out to the ice cream van with a plastic fine fare bag with empty bottles.
