Question for the Ed's or anyone in the know.
What's in it for a player signing a 7 year contract with Chelsea ( or any other club for that matter )?

{Ed001's Note - money. When a player moves their contract has to be paid up, so they guarantee themselves to be set for life.}

Security for the player as well. And if they’re playing well they can always renegotiated it contract, like we did with Alfie I. e. give them better terms part way through a contract.

Chelsea seem to be the only club giving out huge contracts. if these signings don't work out I'm not sure what the club does.

One reason being with the 7 year deals is that the payments and bonuses due to the selling clubs are run over each season. Ways around the financial rules me thinks. 70m/ 7. If not then Chelsea will get hammered soon enough.

Cheers Ed. Always appreciated.
I think I was maybe thinking of the past where clubs had all the power.
Just couldn’t understand why someone would tie themselves to a club for 7 years in this day and age.

Ed are u saying that if a player is sold 3 years into a 5 year contract to a bigger club on a better contract for example, that the selling club need to pay up the remaining 2 years of the 5 year contract to the player when they transfer him to new club?

{Ed001's Note - yes, unless the player has requested a transfer. Usually that is a right that is negotiated away though, sometimes for a smaller pay off, sometimes they take nothing just to move on. It is a similar thing with manager, which is why even when they are sacked they get a pay off.}

MPH the players have all the power and if they want a move they general get it no matter how long in contract.

Do we think players/ Agents will have negotiated a release clause on such long contracts?

It also provides security to the player I’d imagine especially given what happened around CV will they then not be still assured to have their salary for the length of the contract even if the worse happened with the likes of C.V. asking as club is solvent?

Would it also not increase their value for selling when they have such a long contract in place if they’re doing particularly well?

and would also help the club who put them on the long contract in the long run if they are doing g particularly well that they won’t walk away for free a few years down the line?

Theirs definitely positives all round I imagine but can also be negatives if it turns sour I’d imagine?

Fair enough Ed I never knew that mate, perhaps one of these rules that are overlooked by clubs and player just to get the transfer done?
Use rangers as an example here, kenaf Roofe or lunny. Goes for £1m but contract is worth £1.5m to the player. Last year of contract. Surely it’s worth more to the club to just keep the player in that situation then? Rather than take £1m but pay the player £1.5m to go?

Probably varies from transfer to transfer then as it’s a strange rule imo.
Some of the rules involved in transfers u just don’t take into consideration.

{Ed001's Note - usually a player will be happy to forgo a pay off as a multi year contract at a new club is worth more to them.}

That’s kind of what I was thinking Ed almost a case of the buying club just taking over the contract. Interesting stuff though Ed ??.
