Straight forward question guys who was the better right back james tavernier or alan hutton ?Both were brilliant at going forward but not near as good at the defensive side of the game ?.

Hutton was better defensively I think, I remember seeing him tame McGeady a few times, but Tav is better going forward, has more assists and scores a lot more goals. A combination of the two would be some player but still nowhere close to Sandy Jardine.

Tav is the better goalscorer, but that's it. Hutton, during a 2 or 3 year period, was immense for us in the CL, then when he moved, for Scotland in international games. He was stronger going forward, and much stronger in his defensive duties. He also played at a much higher level than Tav.

Really liked Hutton but for me Tavernier for what he brings to us with goals and assists, if we play 4222 on occasion i can definitely see Sterling playing at rb tho.

Hutton was a hell of a lot better at defending. Hutton was better at both, Tav better going forward so I would choose Hutton.

For me Tav defends much better than a lot of people state. Yes, he gets caught out of position when attacking, but midfielders duty is to cover that. If you watch him when he is in position then a high percentage of his work is good.

Stick Tav in a better rangers team he’d look incredible IMO, one season the rest of the team were on it when we won the league look at the defensive record, and going forward he’s always unbelievable over a season if I were to pick one for my team I’d take Tav.

I hate comparing past and present players, feels like choosing between your kids or something ? Both great players in different eras.

Hutton had a good season and then was offloaded.

Hutton, without a doubt in my mind.

Hutton for me, I feel I have to say that as he stays round the corner from me.

Used to love watching Hutton blooter mcgeady and he was a better defender than Tav. If you look at it another way the Rangers team that Hutton played in would have got on just fine had they lost Hutton for any great length of time due to transfers, injuries etc but due to the fact Tav has been our main attacking threat for 3 years could the current team have got by without him? Would we have made the europa league final without him? No chance.

Hutton.

16.) 08 Jul 2023

Tav every day of the week for me.

18.) 08 Jul 2023

Tav but neither come close to Gary Steven's the best RB iv seen at Rangers in the last 30/ 40 years.

Hutton for me.

21.) 08 Jul 2023

Tavernier has played 400 games for Rangers. He’s scored 101 goals, and registered 117 assists. We’ve never had a full-back with this much attacking output in my lifetime. Tavernier’s contribution going forward is incredible.

Also, Numan was asked recently who he would most like to play with from the current Rangers squad and his answer was Tavernier. He said having both bombing up the wings would’ve been great back then, and it would’ve been. He didn’t think Tavernier would’ve looked out of place at all in one of those teams.

I remember Hutton and he was quite good but as soon as he got a bit of hype he was off. His Rangers career was brief. I have many fond memories of Tavernier, few of Hutton.

Hutton was an excellent 1 v 1 defender coops.

This is my honest opinion guys i honestly hand on heart think tav gets very underrated by a good few of our supporters ?.

Walter tav is also overrated by some of our supported.
Not many teams have looked at him over the years.

27.) 08 Jul 2023
08 Jul 2023 17:36:16
Hutton went for 12 million in 2008 and we signed Tavernier for 250k because no decent team in England wanted him. Think that answers the question.

28.) 08 Jul 2023
08 Jul 2023 17:52:19
The fact is Hutton went to a top 6 team for £13million in 2008 in 2023 what would the fee of been £25million plus don’t think tav has ever been looked at by a top 6 team he’s still a really good player and has has some interest from the epl.

29.) 08 Jul 2023

Who needs celtic supporters when we constantly have our supporters on here bringing our players down ?.

30.) 08 Jul 2023

Saying Hutton is better than Tavernier isn't putting players down Walter its having a different opinion from you.

Gary stevens rules watp.

32.) 08 Jul 2023

Tav and it’s not even close. Gentleman, true blue and our Captain Marvel. I will long remember Hart flapping at his freekick.

34.) 08 Jul 2023
08 Jul 2023 22:45:21
Hutton never went to a top 6 team he went to spurs a crap spurs at that take your rose tinted specks off Hutton had a good year and a half any anyone saying otherwise is at it.

35.) 08 Jul 2023
08 Jul 2023 22:46:53

08 Jul 2023 22:48:58
Sweep have you got anything good to say about any rangers player in our history av yet to read you say anything good about anyone. You’re a Celtic fan on here for a noise up and a won't be told different. No rangers talks their club down like you. It’s no a difference a opinion it’s complete slander to the team you supposedly support.

Bizz I agree mate. I also think there’s been a stigma around Tav’s defending without any real acknowledgment of the improvements he’s made in that part of his game. People love throwing that around but how many goals do we lose in a season because of Tav’s defensive errors or poor positioning? We lose a hell of a lot more goals because of Borna and Goldson being out of position or failing to mark their men than we do Tav. It’s also unrealistic to expect tav to contribute so much offensively and then be back there to cover on a counter, hence why we have 2 CDMs which worked fantastically the 55 season. Bankie what are the leadership skills that he lacks mate? I’d compare him to Gerrard, many ex Liverpool players have said that it was his professionalism, driving standards in training and around the club and leading by example on the pitch that were his strengths, loyal to the club aswell. Tav is a similar type of captain, dragged us to the europa league final with his performances, handling the pressure of important penalties along the way.
